THE PHANTASTIC ZOO:“Kaufman gives children a fantastical experience with his collection of magical creatures... The author presents it all in heightened language that helps build a sense of awe... The siblings’ affection for each other is sweetly depicted, as well... (in the book version) illustrations have the colorful, flat feeling of pale Matisse paintings, emphasizing the narrative’s air of strange adventure. A warmhearted, encouraging book about the wonders of imagination.” (Kirkus Reviews)

“Christopher Kaufman’s THE MUSICAL FOREST builds on the tradition of Stravinsky’s L’histoire du Soldat and Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, creating a unique performance work that entertains and educates in an original work of art.” – Joe Carrol, Emmy Award Winning Composer who worked with Jim Henson for over 25 years on projects such as Sesame Street.

Tales Of The Ocean City: Books One through Five
Kaufman’s writing is effective, particularly in the extensive and elaborate battle scenes, which are at times marked with realistic brutality. He never misses a chance to describe the horror of the Vorm and their dark maze with visceral detail, their insect-like qualities almost making the skin crawl. Above all, Kaufman excels in the descriptions of places and environments.
The author’s bio mentions that he is a composer, and that is evident throughout the book with musical references and analogies, charming devices to give the writing color. Also to be mentioned is that the novel is illustrated by the author himself in an impressionistic style. On most pages the illustration acts as a thick background frame and the effect this has on the reading experience is quite interesting, with each page turn presenting a change in color, which influences and interacts with mood.
